When Does Your Stove Need a Sweep?

Tell us what you burn and how. The dial reads your burn like a stove pipe thermometer, and you get a sweep plan for the season.

A Clean Burn

One sweep a season. Book it in late summer, before the first fire.

A rule of thumb from what we pull out of Bend chimneys, not a promise. Creosote over 1/8 inch means sweep now, whatever the dial says. A yearly inspection is still the rule.

Burning Wood in Oregon Has Its Own Rules

Most of Central Oregon heats with wood at least part of the winter. The state keeps a close eye on it, and so do we.

Selling a house with an old stove?Oregon law says an uncertified wood stove or insert has to be removed and destroyed at the sale. We check the label and handle it.
Smoke is a sign, not a smell.Thick smoke from your chimney on a cold morning means wet wood or a choked down fire. That is where creosote comes from.

Our old insert had no liner, which we never knew. They put in a stainless one and the house does not smell like smoke anymore.

    Karen S., Bend

He showed me the moisture meter on my wood. 28 percent. Lesson learned.

    Matt D., Redmond

Came out to Sisters in a snowstorm and left the hearth cleaner than he found it.

How often should a wood stove be swept?

Get it inspected once a year, no matter how little you burn. That is the national fire code for chimneys, NFPA 211. How often it needs a sweep depends on the stove, the wood and how you burn, which is what the dial above works out.

I am selling my house. What about the old wood stove?

Oregon law says an uncertified wood stove or insert has to be removed and destroyed when a home is sold. We check for the EPA or Oregon label, pull the old one if needed and give you the paperwork for the sale.

    Is juniper good firewood?

Dry juniper burns hot and clean, and it pops, so keep the door shut. Lodgepole and ponderosa pine are fine too once they are dry. Split it, stack it off the ground and give it a full summer. Aim for under 20 percent on a moisture meter.

Does my fireplace insert need a liner?

Yes. An insert should vent through a stainless liner that runs all the way to the top of the chimney. Many older inserts around Bend were set with no liner at all. They build creosote fast in the old clay flue, so we check that first.

Do you work on pellet stoves?

Yes. We clean the burn pot, heat exchanger, fans and the vent pipe. Pellet vents clog with fine ash, so plan on a cleaning after about two tons of pellets or once a season.
