Questions Before You File

Short answers to what we hear every week. Every case is different, so call with yours.

Can I file for citizenship before my five years are up?

Yes, a little. USCIS lets you file up to 90 days before you reach the three or five year mark. Filing earlier than that gets the application sent back.

Will a long trip abroad hurt my application?

It can. A trip of more than six months can break your continuous residence unless you can show you kept strong ties here. A trip of a year or more usually does. Bring us your travel dates before you file.

What is on the citizenship test?

An officer checks your English reading, writing and speaking, and asks civics questions about U.S. history and government. Some older applicants who have lived here a long time can take the test in their own language.

My employer is sponsoring my green card. Do I need my own lawyer?

The company's lawyer works for the company. That is usually fine. But if you are thinking of changing jobs, or your spouse's status depends on yours, a short talk with a lawyer of your own can save trouble.

How long does the whole citizenship process take?

It changes by office and by year. Many people in New Jersey wait several months to a year from filing to the oath. We check the current wait for your office when you call.
