Four Ways Out of Debt. We Show You All Four.

Settlement, a nonprofit plan, a loan or a lawyer. We tell you which one fits, even when it isn't us.

Put In Your Numbers. See All Four Side by Side.

Rough numbers are fine. Nothing here is saved or sent. It is the same sheet we fill out with you on your first visit.

Credit harm
Light. Cards on the plan get closed, which can dip your score at first. Payments show on time.
Fees
Often $0 to $50 a month, set by the agency within state rules.

Debt Settlement

We ask each creditor to take less than you owe. This is what we do.

Checking
$0
How long
Credit harm
Heavy. Accounts go late while you save. Settled accounts show for up to seven years.
Fees
Sample fee 20 percent of the enrolled debt, charged only after a debt is settled and you pay on it.

Consolidation Loan

One loan from a bank or credit union pays off the cards. We don't lend.

Checking

Credit harm
Small dip from the credit check. It can help later if the cards stay paid down.
Fees
Some lenders take an origination fee, often 1 to 8 percent, out of the loan.

Bankruptcy Consult

A free first talk with a local bankruptcy lawyer. We refer you.

Checking

Set by the court and your lawyer
How long
Chapter 7 often ends in about 4 months. Chapter 13 runs 3 to 5 years.
Credit harm
The biggest hit. Chapter 7 stays 10 years and Chapter 13 stays 7.
Fees
Court filing fee around $300 plus the lawyer's fee. We take no referral fee.

These are estimates, not offers. The loan uses a sample APR of 15.9 percent for 48 months. Your rate, term and approval depend on your credit and the lender. This is not an offer of credit.

Settlement is not a sure thing. Creditors do not have to agree, and some sue. Forgiven debt may count as taxable income. Settlement can hurt your credit for years.

Results depend on your creditors. The settlement range assumes creditors take 40 to 60 percent of the balance. Some take less, some take more, some say no.

How We Charge, in Writing

Debt relief has a bad name in this town, and some of it is earned. Here is how our office works, the same way it reads in the agreement.

  • Nothing up front

No fee until a creditor agrees to a settlement, you say yes to it, and you make a payment on it. That is the FTC rule, and we follow it on every account.

  • One set percent

Our fee is a set share of the debt you enroll, written down before you sign. It does not go up if a deal takes longer.

  • Your money stays yours

Savings sit in an account in your name at an outside bank. Quit any time and you keep what is in it, less any fees already earned.

  • We name the risks

Late marks, possible lawsuits, taxes on forgiven debt, and creditors who say no. You hear all four before you sign.

Sometimes the Answer Is a Nonprofit

If you have steady pay and can cover the plan payment, a certified nonprofit credit counselor may cost less and hurt your credit less than we would. We will give you their number and not charge you for the talk.

He told me settlement was a bad idea for me and sent me to a nonprofit plan. Who does that? I'll be done in four years.

Dana R. Derby

They were clear my credit would take a hit. It did. Three cards settled and I paid nothing until each one closed.

Marcus T. Haysville

Calm people. They walked me through the tax form part before I even asked.

Straight Answers

Do you charge anything up front?

No. Federal rules say a debt settlement company cannot take a fee until a debt is settled and you have made at least one payment on that deal. We follow that rule on every account. The first talk is free too.

Will settlement hurt my credit?

Yes, and we say so before you sign. Accounts usually go late while you save up, and a settled account shows on your report for up to seven years. If your credit matters more to you right now, a nonprofit plan or a loan may be the better road.

Do creditors have to agree to settle?

No. A creditor can say no, and some sue while you are saving. We tell you which of your creditors tend to settle and which tend not to, based on what we see in Wichita.

Is forgiven debt taxed?

It can be. If a creditor forgives $600 or more, you may get a 1099 C and owe income tax on it, unless you were insolvent. Talk to a tax preparer before tax season. We give you a list of every forgiven amount.

Why would you send me to a nonprofit counselor?

Because for many people with steady pay a nonprofit debt management plan costs less and hurts credit less than settlement. When the comparer shows that, we give you the name of a certified counselor in town and do not charge you.

Rather Talk It Through?

A counselor calls you back the same day if you ask before 3 on a weekday. No pressure and no charge to talk.
