Over the Counter or Prescription Hearing Aids?

Store bought hearing aids work well for some people. Answer five questions and we tell you which kind fits, what it usually costs and when to see a doctor first.

Have you had any of these?

Check any that fit. Leave them all blank if none do.

Dad would never have gone to a clinic. She came to the house, tested him in his own chair and he wore the aids to supper that night.

    Karen L. Hermantown

She told me the store ones would probably do for my mild loss and showed me how to set them up. Saved me a lot.

    Gary P. Two Harbors

Came out in a snowstorm to fix my aid before my granddaughter's wedding.

    Questions Families Ask

Is a hearing test at home as good as one in a clinic?

For most people, yes. We bring a calibrated audiometer and noise blocking headphones and check the room first. If your results point to something medical, we refer you to an ear doctor.

What does a home visit cost?

In this demo a home hearing test is $95, and that amount comes off the price if you buy hearing aids from us. Cleanings and small repairs for aids you already own start at $40. There is no travel charge inside our area.

Does Medicare pay for hearing aids?

Original Medicare does not pay for hearing aids. Some Medicare Advantage and supplement plans do. Call us with your plan card and we check what yours covers before the visit.

Can you work on hearing aids I bought somewhere else?

Usually, yes. We clean, retube and reprogram most major brands, and we can send them out for factory repair. Some store brand aids can only be adjusted by the store that sold them.

Will hearing aids make my hearing normal again?

No hearing aid can do that, and results vary. Most people hear speech more clearly, and it takes a few weeks for the brain to get used to new sound. We come back for adjustments as often as you need in the first 90 days.
