When Medical Care Goes Wrong

We help Massachusetts patients and families find out why, after a medical error or a death. The first talk is free.

What We Handle

Each of these begins with a person who trusted a doctor, a hospital or a care home. Pick one to see more.

Build Your Timeline

Pick what happened and when. You get the general Massachusetts deadline as a date, the notice step that comes before a suit, and the records to ask for now. Nothing leaves this page.

What happened?
Did someone die?
Your best guess is fine. For a slow diagnosis, use the date you first learned of it.

This is general information, not legal advice. Using it does not create an attorney client relationship. Deadlines depend on the facts and can be shorter or longer. Please call to confirm yours.

A Small Firm on Beacon Hill

Two partners, one nurse, and a short list of cases we can give real time to.

Grace Ahn spent eight years as an ICU nurse at a Boston teaching hospital before law school. Paul Whitcombe has tried medical cases in Suffolk and Middlesex courts for two decades.

We have outside doctors review every case before we file it. If we do not think we can help, we tell you why, and we point you to someone who can.

    Questions Families Ask

Plain answers. If yours is not here, call and ask it.

How long do I have to bring a malpractice case in Massachusetts?

In general, three years from the day of the harm, or from the day you knew or should have known that care caused it. Most cases also have an outer limit of seven years. A child's case can run longer.

What is the 182 day notice?

Before a malpractice suit is filed, Massachusetts generally requires a written notice to each provider at least 182 days ahead, with an offer of proof. It gives the provider time to respond. It is one reason to call early.

How do I get my medical records?

Ask the hospital or office in writing for your full chart. They generally must respond within 30 days, and they can charge a copy fee. We can request them for you.

What does it cost to talk with you?

The first talk is free. If we take your case, we work on a contingency fee, so our fee comes from any recovery. If there is no recovery, you owe no fee. It is all in writing first.

Can a family bring a case after a death?

Yes. A wrongful death claim is brought by the representative of the estate for the family. In general it must be filed within three years of the death. We help with the estate steps too.

    Is every bad outcome malpractice?

No. Medicine has risks, and some harm happens even with good care. A case needs care that fell below the standard, and harm caused by it. We will tell you honestly what we find.
