Your Medicare Birthday Guide
Pick your birthday month and year. You will see when you can sign up, your two main choices, and what to bring when you come see us.
When Does Your Window Open?
Your first chance to sign up is a seven month window around your 65th birthday. We only need your birth month and year.
Your window runs from March 2027 through September 2027.
Sign up by the end of May 2027 and your coverage starts June 1, 2027.
Your six month Medigap open enrollment starts when your Part B starts. During those months a Supplement cannot turn you down or charge more for your health.
Your window opens in a few months. This is general information to help you plan. Social Security and Medicare set your real dates. Still working with job coverage at 65? You may be able to wait. See the questions below.
Two Ways to Get Covered
Almost everyone starts with Part A is hospital coverage. Most people pay no monthly premium for it because they paid Medicare taxes while working. and Part B covers doctor visits, tests and outpatient care. It has a monthly premium that most people pay out of their Social Security check.. Then you pick one of two paths.
Original Medicare plus a Supplement
- See any doctor in the country who takes Medicare.
- A Medigap is another name for a Medicare Supplement. It pays some or most of what Parts A and B leave behind. plan fills most of the gaps, so bills are small when you use care.
- A higher monthly premium, and you add a separate drug plan.
- Switching to a Supplement later can mean health questions.
Medicare Advantage
- One plan from a private company, with doctors in a network.
- Often a low monthly premium on top of Part B.
- Copays when you use care, with a yearly limit on what you pay.
- Most include drug coverage, and many add dental, vision or hearing.
Which fits depends on your doctors, your drugs, your health and your budget. We show you both with your own list in front of you.
How Drug Coverage Works
Part D is the drug part of Medicare. With Original Medicare, it is a separate plan. With most Medicare Advantage plans, it is built in.
Each plan has its own list of covered drugs and its own pharmacies. The cheapest plan for your neighbor can cost you more, so we check your exact drugs and doses.
There is a yearly cap on what you pay out of pocket for covered drugs. It was $2,000 in 2025 and goes up a little each year.
If you go without drug coverage for a long stretch after your window closes, a late penalty can be added to your premium for as long as you have Part D.

Questions We Hear Every Week
Does it cost anything to meet with you?
No. The plans pay us. A plan costs the same whether you get it from us, from the company or on Medicare.gov. You never pay us a fee.
Should I pick a Supplement or Medicare Advantage?
It depends on your doctors, your health and your budget. People who travel or want to keep any doctor often lean toward a Supplement. People who want a lower monthly cost and extras like dental often lean toward Advantage. We lay both out side by side so you can pick.
I am still working at 65. Do I have to sign up?
Maybe not. If you have health coverage from a job where you or your spouse still work, you may be able to wait on Part B without a penalty. Bring your work plan papers and we will check it with you.
When can I change my plan?
Every fall from October 15 to December 7, anyone on Medicare can switch plans for January 1. If you are in a Medicare Advantage plan, you also get one change from January 1 to March 31.
