    Tread depth is measured in 32nds of an inch. New tires start near 10/32. California's legal minimum is 2/32, and wet grip drops off below 4/32.
    P0420 means the catalytic converter on bank 1 is not cleaning the exhaust as well as it should. The car will not pass a California smog check with this code.
    A paint meter reads how thick the paint is. Factory paint reads about the same on every panel. A much higher reading means body filler or a repaint.

    Questions Buyers Ask

    What does the $225 inspection cover?

    A 150 plus point check of the engine bay, fluids, brakes, tires, suspension, body and paint, lights, the interior and a test drive. We also read the engine codes. You get a photo report the same day.

    Does the seller have to be there?

    Someone has to hand us the keys and say yes to a test drive. It can be the seller, a dealer salesperson or a friend of the seller. You do not have to be there, but you are welcome to watch.

    Why is a compression test extra?

    We have to pull the ignition coils and spark plugs to do it. That takes time and needs the seller's OK first. It is worth it on a high mileage engine or when the engine runs rough.

    Can you inspect cars at a dealer?

    Yes. Most dealers in Orange County allow outside inspections. Call them first and tell them an inspector is coming, so the car is out of the row and ready.

    Will you tell me whether to buy the car?

    We tell you what we found and what it costs to fix. The report sorts every item into pass, watch or fail. The choice to buy is yours, and many buyers use the report to settle on a lower price.
