WHAT IT MEANS

USUAL FIXES

Typical total
BEFORE THE RETEST
STATE REPAIR HELPThe Consumer Assistance Program, called CAP, from the Bureau of Automotive Repair can help pay for smog repairs. The state sets who qualifies and how much it pays. Apply and get approved before any repair starts, or it won't count.
HCHydrocarbons. Raw fuel that didn't burn. Almost always a misfire or a vacuum leak.
COCarbon monoxide. Too much fuel for the air, which means the engine runs rich.
NOxOxides of nitrogen. Made when the fire in the engine runs too hot. Often a clogged EGR or a worn converter.
MonitorsSelf tests the car's computer runs while you drive, one for each emissions system. Each one reads ready or not ready.
EVAPThe system that holds gas tank fumes and burns them in the engine, so they don't leak into the air.
EO numberAn Executive Order number from the California Air Resources Board. It proves an aftermarket part is legal on your car.
Trouble codesCodes like P0420 that the computer stores when it sees a problem. They point to a system, not always a part.

What Drivers Say

4.8
★★★★★356 Google reviews

Two shops wanted to sell me a converter. They found a vacuum leak, fixed it for under $200, and my Accord passed.

Luis M. Stockton

They explained the drive cycle in plain words and told me not to rush the retest. Passed on the first try after.

Janet K. Lodi

Helped me figure out if I qualified for CAP before they touched the car. Nobody else even mentioned it.

Tran N. Manteca

Failed Smog Questions

Can I just clear the check engine light and retest?

No. Clearing the codes also resets the readiness monitors, and the station can't test a car whose monitors are not ready. The light will come back anyway if the problem is still there.

Do you do the retest here?

We fix the car and tell you when it is ready. If your DMV notice says your car must go to a test only or STAR station, you take it there for the retest, and we tell you which ones are close.

Will you use a cheap catalytic converter?

We can't, and nobody in California should. A replacement converter has to be approved by the Air Resources Board for your exact car, with an EO number on it. The cheap federal ones you see online are not legal here and will fail.

How long does a smog repair take?

Most repairs are done the same day or the next. Then the car needs a few days of normal driving so the computer can finish its self tests before the retest.

Can the state help pay for my repair?

Maybe. The Consumer Assistance Program from the Bureau of Automotive Repair helps some drivers pay for smog repairs. The state sets who qualifies and how much it pays. Apply and get approved before any repair starts.
