What Size Softener Do You Need?

Change anything below. The answer updates as you go.

Your water hardness
Hardness is measured in grains per gallon. One grain is about 17 parts per million, so a strip that reads 290 ppm is about 17 grains.

Chandler water runs about 15 to 20 grains. That is very hard, so a softener here pays off in water heaters, fixtures and soap.

Chandler Water Sits Way Past Very Hard

That white crust on your shower head is calcium and magnesium. The same crust builds up inside your water heater and every faucet cartridge. A softener swaps it out before it gets past the garage.

Most Chandler taps test 15 to 20 grains per gallon.

He tested our water at the sink and showed us the number. Glass shower doors have stayed clear for three months now.

Denise R., Chandler

They talked us into a smaller softener than the big box store quoted. Salt lasts about five weeks.

Marco T., Gilbert

The RO water finally tastes right. Install took two hours and they swept the garage after.

How hard is Chandler water?

Most Chandler homes test between 15 and 20 grains per gallon. Anything over 10.5 counts as very hard. Your number depends on which wells and canals feed your part of town that month, so we test at your tap before we size anything.

Will soft water feel slippery?

A little, at first. That slick feel is soap rinsing off clean instead of sticking to hard water minerals. Most people stop noticing it in a week.

Do I still need reverse osmosis if I have a softener?

A softener only swaps hardness. It does not take out salt, nitrates or the other dissolved solids in Arizona water. An RO faucet at the kitchen sink does, and that is what most people here drink and cook with.

How often do I add salt?

Most families add one or two 40 pound bags a month. Keep the brine tank at least a third full. We can drop salt off on a schedule if you would rather not carry it.

Where does the softener go in a Chandler house?

Usually in the garage, on the soft water loop the builder left near the water heater. If your house has no loop, we run one. That takes most of a day and we quote it before we start.
