We think Yext works great when it's the right tool for the job. As a long-time directory citation management platform, they've earned awards including Best in Biz and the Ad-to-Action Award, and they remain a powerful provider of directory citation management. But in 2026, the question is more nuanced than it was in 2017 — and the answer depends heavily on where your business is in its growth.
Why Citations Matter In The First Place
43% of businesses have inaccurate listings online — wrong phone number, wrong address, wrong business name. Using a platform like Yext cleans this up to make sure all of your correct information is being pushed out to 70+ Tier 1 directories, building the relevancy signal that search engines like Google appreciate.
A strong digital presence online is the single most important thing you can do as a local business owner. Inconsistent NAP (Name, Address, Phone) data across the web is one of the most common reasons businesses can't crack the top 3 of the local map pack. See our top ten free listings guide for the manual approach to fixing this.
How Yext Works: The Match-and-Lock System
When a business or brand purchases a Yext subscription, the first thing that occurs is the Match and Lock. Both are absolutely critical steps in the creation of a managed listing using Yext's platform.
The Match Process
The match process is exactly as it sounds. It happens the moment the initial name, address, phone number (NAP) data and other information for the business location is entered into the Yext client dashboard. Yext scans its publisher network looking for existing entries that match your business — and pulls them in.
The Lock Process
The Lock process occurs when Yext identifies a business listing match at a publisher partner website. The Lock is completely unique to Yext. All other data suppliers, aggregators, and even direct submissions from business owners do not "lock" the listing from being changed or altered.
Yext takes control of the business listing at each publisher and the listing is no longer subject to changes from hundreds (or thousands) of other sources. Your listings are 100% protected while Yext manages and maintains them.
Imagine if a competitor or someone with a grudge against your business wanted to change your information online and negatively impact your business. The enhanced protection Yext offers your listings is like the LifeLock of digital marketing. Not only that, but you never know when an old listing containing bad phone numbers or addresses could pop up from another directory source — Yext keeps those suppressed automatically.
Enhanced Directory Citations & Content
For a listing to be highly favored by a search engine, it requires more than traditional NAP data. Search engines value rich listings with strong enhanced content. NAP can only go so far — communicating the identity and quality of a business to consumers takes photos, content, and detail.
Listings that include enhanced content like images, descriptions, contact information, directions, and reviews are far more effective. Customization options for content within each listing include:
- Hours of operation (including holiday hours)
- Photos and videos
- Staff bios
- Product and service lists
- Menus (for restaurants and salons)
- Specials and featured messages
- Events
- Reviews
- Calendars
When Yext Makes Sense (And When It Doesn't) In 2026
This is where the answer has gotten more nuanced since 2017.
Yext makes sense if:
- You have multiple physical locations (10+) and need centralized management
- Your business operates in highly-regulated industries where listing accuracy is legally important (healthcare, financial services)
- You have a franchise network with location-level autonomy
- You've had persistent NAP inconsistency problems across the web from old data
- You value set-it-and-forget-it over hands-on monthly management
Yext may not make sense if:
- You're a single-location small business with $0-2K monthly marketing budget
- You're willing to do DIY citation management using the top 10 free directories we cover in our citation guide
- You'd rather pay an agency monthly to handle this as part of a broader campaign
- Your business is in a category with limited directory presence where the locked enhanced content doesn't add much
The Bigger Picture
Citations are one signal in the broader local SEO game. They matter — but they're not the whole game. Get them right, then move on to Google Business Profile optimization, content marketing, reviews, and link building. See our best local SEO strategy guide for the full framework.
We are honored to be a Yext-certified partner and have used the platform successfully across many client engagements. We also know when NOT to recommend it. That's the difference between an agency selling a platform and an agency selling outcomes.
