7 Free Fixes That Fill a Carpet Cleaner's Calendar
Straight to It

Answer every call or text back in a minute. Fix your Business Profile category and service areas. Ask every customer for a review and offer nothing for it. Build a rebook list on the 12 to 18 month cycle the carpet industry recommends. Give pet stains and wet carpet their own pages. Then line up flooring stores and property managers who send work for free.

What Changed

The Mistake We See Most

We look at a lot of carpet cleaning companies, and the worst mistake is the same almost every time. The owner wants more calls, so he buys them. Then the paid calls land on a phone nobody answers mid job, a profile with a vague category and no way to rebook last year's customers. The ads get blamed.

The cheapest calls are the ones you are already losing. Seven fixes get most of them back, and none of them cost a dollar. They cost an afternoon or two.

Here they are in the order we would do them. Worst leak first.

The Seven Fixes at a Glance

Score yourself on each line. Every no is a free job you are giving away.

Fix 1: Answer Every Call or Text Back in a Minute

A dog has an accident on the rug an hour before guests arrive. The owner searches and calls the first cleaner that looks real. If you are on your knees with the wand running, you miss it. She calls the next one. That job is gone in about two minutes.

  1. Set your line to text back any missed call on its own. One line, saying a real person saw it.
  2. Ask three things on the callback. The rooms, the stain or problem, and pets or kids at home.
  3. Offer two time windows, not one fixed slot.
  4. Book before you hang up. Never end with we will call you back.

This matters even more once you pay for leads. Google's Local Services rules say a missed call during business hours can be charged when the caller stays on the line for more than 20 seconds. Our missed call calculator shows what slow answers cost you now.

Fix 2: Pick the Right Category and Keep One Profile

Google says to select a primary category that best describes your business, and to pick a specific one over a broad one. Its own example is choosing nail salon over salon. For you, that means carpet cleaning service over a general cleaning label.

Google's guidelines also say to choose the fewest number of categories it takes to describe your overall core business, and that there should only be one profile per business. A second profile for upholstery or tile does not help. It splits your reviews and can cause trouble. Put upholstery, tile, grout and rugs in the services list instead.

Fix 3: Set Your Service Areas and Hide the Address

You go to the customer, so you are a service area business. Google lets you set up to 20 service areas, and says the whole area should be no more than about 2 hours of driving from your base. If customers never come to your shop, Google says to remove your address from the profile.

Pick the towns you want to drive to, not every town you could reach. A tight area is easier to rank in and cheaper to serve. Not claimed your profile yet? Start with our guide to claiming it.

Fix 4: Ask Every Customer for a Review, and Offer Nothing

Google suggests you ask customers to visit a Google link or scan a QR code. The same page says offering free or discounted goods or services in exchange for reviews is strictly prohibited. So the ten percent off for a review card some cleaners hand out breaks Google's rule.

The FTC has its own rule. Under 16 CFR 465.4, a business cannot give rewards tied to a review that says something good or bad. Google's rule is stricter, so follow it and you cover both.

Timing matters in this trade. Send the ask a few hours after the job, once the carpet is dry and the customer can see the result. Put the link in the same text as the invoice. Our free review link generator makes it in a minute.

Fix 5: Build the 12 to 18 Month Rebook List

This is the fix most cleaners skip, and it is the biggest one. The Carpet and Rug Institute tells homeowners to professionally deep clean carpets every 12 to 18 months. The same page says certified cleaners are recommended and sometimes required by the maker to keep the warranty.

So your next job is already on the calendar. You just have to send the reminder. The cheapest call you will ever get is from a customer you already cleaned for.

  1. Pull every past customer from your invoices into one sheet. Name, phone, address, date of last clean, pets yes or no.
  2. Set a reminder text at 11 months for homes with pets or kids, and 12 months for the rest.
  3. Keep it short. Your name, the date of the last clean, and two open windows.
  4. Mention the warranty once. Many owners do not know their carpet warranty names cleaning rules.

Take made up round numbers. Say you have 600 past customers and one in five rebooks after a reminder. That is 120 jobs. At $200 a job, the list is worth $24,000 a year, and it cost you an afternoon to build.

Fix 6: Give Each Job You Want Its Own Page

A home page that says we clean carpets does not win the pet urine search or the flooded basement search. A page about that exact job does. Write one page for each job you want more of, and answer the questions people really ask.

Then answer the questions the industry tells homeowners to ask. The Carpet and Rug Institute suggests asking how long you have been in business, whether you vacuum before deep cleaning, and how your pricing works. It says pricing should be based on the area cleaned, not the number of rooms. Put all three answers on every service page.

If your techs are trained to the ANSI/IICRC S100 standard for professional carpet cleaning, say so near the quote form. Proof beats adjectives.

Upholstery is an easy add on. It earns its own page and its own line on the profile.

Fix 7: Line Up Three Referral Partners

Some of the best carpet jobs never touch a search box. They come from people who see dirty carpet before you do.

Give each partner a card with its own tracking number, so you know who sends what. Thank them when a job closes. Three good partners can beat a month of paid clicks.

Only after the seven fixes are done. Then paid leads land on a phone that answers, a profile that looks busy and pages that answer the real question.

Local Services is the first paid step to test. Google lists carpet cleaning services among the eligible categories, and the same page warns that if you regularly fail to answer calls or respond to messages, your ad ranking may be affected. You pay per valid lead, not per click. Start small, track every lead to a booked job, and compare it with what your free channels already bring. We covered how missed calls are charged in our missed call story.

How We Set Up Carpet Cleaners

When a carpet cleaner comes to Clickflame, we do these seven fixes first, in this order. A tracking line rings the owner and texts back any missed call. We fix the category and service areas, set up the review link, and build the rebook list from past invoices. Then we write the job pages, and only then talk about paid leads.

Speed is part of it. For our client Everett Local Movers, a crew of two movers and a truck, we bought the domain, set up a tracking line that rings his cell and texts back, and launched a 26 page site in one afternoon. The build is in our Everett Local Movers case study.

Our local search service covers the profile, reviews and tracking. Want to see where you stand first? The free SEO audit takes a few minutes and shows which of the seven fixes you are missing.

Evidence

Every number in this story comes from one of these. If a figure is ours, the paragraph says so.

Help Desk Answers

How do carpet cleaners get more customers without paying for ads?

Answer every call, fix your Business Profile, and ask every customer for a review. Then build a rebook list on the 12 to 18 month cycle the Carpet and Rug Institute recommends, and line up flooring stores and property managers who refer work. None of that costs money, only time.

How often should I remind customers to book a carpet cleaning?

The Carpet and Rug Institute recommends a professional deep clean every 12 to 18 months, more often if needed. Send a reminder around the 12 month mark, and sooner for homes with pets or kids.

Can I give customers a discount for leaving a Google review?

No. Google bans payment, discounts or free service in exchange for any review. The FTC rule also bans rewards tied to a review saying something good. Ask every customer and offer nothing.

What category should a carpet cleaner pick on Google?

Pick the most specific category that fits your main work, which for most is carpet cleaning service. Google says to use the fewest categories it takes to describe your core business. Put upholstery, tile and rugs in your services list.

Should my website mention the IICRC S100 standard?

If your techs are trained to it, yes. ANSI/IICRC S100 is the standard for professional cleaning of carpet and rugs. Say it plainly on your service pages, next to how you price and whether you vacuum first.

When should a carpet cleaner start paying for leads?

After the free fixes are done and every call is tracked. Carpet cleaning is eligible for Local Services Ads, which charge per valid lead. A missed call can be charged too, so fix the phone before you pay.
