Yes, Wix is good enough for SEO for most local service businesses. It renders pages on the server, builds your sitemap and lets you edit every title, description, redirect and schema block. In our October 17, 2026 test the four Wix sites averaged 67 out of 100 against 76 for WordPress. The gap came from blank defaults, not from Wix itself. Fill in the meta descriptions, the Business Info, your own schema and a real llms.txt summary.
What Changed
- Only 4 of the 61 sites we scanned ran on Wix, so treat the 67 average as a hint, not a verdict.
- Wix leaves the meta description blank by default. Across all 61 sites, 46% of pages had none.
- Wix builds LocalBusiness schema for your homepage only, for one location, from four fields.
- The automatic Wix llms.txt is one template. On 47 agency sites, 48 of its 52 lines were the same.
- You can edit the llms.txt file in the dashboard, but only on a paid plan with your own domain.
- When five sites got their missing basics filled in, the average score went from 68 to 79.
Straight to It, Backed by a Scan
We look at a lot of small business websites. Plenty of them are on Wix. The owner almost always asks the same thing. Is Wix holding me back on Google?
Most of the time, no. Wix is not the problem. The problem is that Wix ships a site that looks done when the SEO part is still half blank. The title tags fill themselves in with the page name. The meta descriptions stay empty. The schema knows your address and not much else. And the file that tells AI tools who you are reads almost the same as 46 other Wix sites.
The builder is fine. The defaults are not.
That is the whole post in two lines. The rest is the proof, the settings that matter for a plumber, roofer, locksmith or shop, and the short list of things Wix still makes you do by hand. Everything Wix says below comes from Wix's own help pages and product pages, which we opened in October 2026.
What We Measured on 61 Real Business Sites
On October 17, 2026 we ran 61 small business websites through Rank Any Site, the scanner we built. The sites were picked at random from public listings for four trades. That was 19 roofers, 17 locksmiths, 17 auto repair shops and 8 law firms. The scan read up to about 15 pages per site and scored each one out of 100 on what search engines and AI tools can read in the page source.
This is how the platforms came out. WordPress sites averaged 76. Custom built sites averaged 67. Wix sites averaged 67. The middle score across all 61 sites was 75. The lowest was 38 and the highest was 94.
Now the caveat. Only 4 of the 61 sites ran on Wix. Four sites is a small sample. One bad Wix site or one great one would swing that average a lot. So do not read this as proof that Wix sites score 9 points lower than WordPress sites. Read it as a hint that points the same way as what we see in audits every week.
The full method and the numbers are on the Rank Any Site proof page. We do not publish which sites we scanned. They are real businesses that did not ask to be in a study.

What Was Missing on Every Platform
The bigger story is what all 61 sites missed, Wix or not. Of the 61, 67% had no llms.txt file. 48% had no LocalBusiness type schema. 46% of the pages we read had no meta description. 16% of sites had two or more pages with the same title. 18% had no sitemap at all.
Look at that list again with Wix in mind. Wix builds the sitemap for you, so a Wix site does not land in the 18%. But Wix also leaves the meta description empty by default, as its own SEO settings guide says. So a Wix owner who never opens the SEO panel lands in the 46% on every page.
What Wix Does Well Out of the Box
Let's give Wix its due first. The old line that "Wix is bad for SEO" still gets passed around in forums. It does not match how Wix builds pages now. This is what Wix says it does, from its SEO product page and its Is Wix SEO friendly post, which was updated in October 2026.
- Server side rendering. Google and AI crawlers get the full page on the first pass. They do not have to run your scripts to see your words.
- An automatic XML sitemap. Wix builds it, keeps it current and sends it to Google Search Console once you connect.
- Image handling. Images are compressed, resized and turned into WebP files on their own.
- Editable basics. You can change title tags, meta descriptions, URL slugs, canonical tags, robots.txt and structured data.
- Redirects. You can set 301 redirects one at a time or import up to 500 at once from a file.
- Preset schema. Product pages, blog posts, event pages and dynamic item pages come with schema already built in.
- Google tools. Search Console and Google Business Profile connect from the dashboard.
That is a real list. Most small business sites we see on other builders do not get half of it for free. If you are on Wix and happy with how the site looks and runs, there is no SEO reason to rebuild it somewhere else. Not yet, anyway.
Wix also has a guided SEO Setup Checklist. It asks for your business name, location and keywords, then hands you a to do list. Do it once. It is a good start. It is just not the finish line.
The Wix SEO Settings That Matter for a Local Business
Wix splits its SEO tools across a few panels. For a local service business, these are the ones that move the needle. All of them live under one path.
The path. Open your dashboard. Click SEO and GEO. Scroll down to Tools and settings. Click SEO Settings. From there you pick a page type, like Main pages or Blog posts, and edit the defaults for that whole group. You can also click Edit by page to change one page on its own.

1. Title Tags
By default, Wix builds each main page title from two variables, the page name and the site name. So your Water Heater page might show up in Google as "Water Heaters | Smith Plumbing". That is not wrong. It is just missing the two words that win local searches, the service the way people type it and your city.
Change the pattern, then rewrite your five to ten money pages by hand. A plumber's page reads better as "Water Heater Repair in Riverside | Smith Plumbing". That example is made up, but the shape is the one we use. Keep it under about 60 characters so Google does not cut it off. And make every title different. In our scan, 16% of sites had at least two pages with the same title.
2. Meta Descriptions
This is the setting most Wix owners never touch. Wix leaves the field blank on purpose. Its help page says that is not an issue, because Google will write a description from your page.
Google does do that. Its own snippet guide says it mostly builds the snippet from page content, and may use your meta description when it describes the page better. So a written description is not a ranking switch. It is your one shot at the two lines under your name in the results, and it is the text AI tools and social shares pick up first.
We write one for every page that matters. Say what you do, where, and one fact the reader can check, like hours or a phone number. Then give them a reason to tap. It takes about two minutes a page.
3. Business Info and LocalBusiness Schema
This one is quick and it matters. Go to Settings, then Business info. Enter your business name in Profile and your address in Location and contact info. Add your logo. Click Save.
Wix's Local Business markup guide says that once you do, Wix builds LocalBusiness schema for your homepage on its own. It uses four things, your name, your site URL, your logo and your address. Wix also says AI assistants read the same markup to work out which business you are. So if the name in Business Info does not match your Google Business Profile, fix that first.

4. Custom Schema for Services
The automatic markup is a floor. For a service business we add more. In SEO Settings, pick the page type, click Edit next to Structured data markup and click Add New Markup. You paste in JSON-LD and Wix places it on the page. Wix lets you stack up to 5 markups per SEO setting, counting the preset one, per its settings guide.
On a service page we use a Service block that names the service, the area served and the business that provides it. On the homepage we add the fields Wix leaves out, like phone and hours. Google's Local Business structured data guide shows telephone, opening hours and geo coordinates in its examples. If you want the plain English version of what to put in it, our guide to LocalBusiness schema walks through each field.
5. Indexing, URLs and Redirects
Three quick checks. First, make sure the Let search engines index your page toggle is on for every page type you want found. It is set per page type, so one wrong switch can hide every booking page you have.
Second, keep your URL slugs short and plain, like /water-heater-repair. Third, if you rename a page, set a 301 redirect from the old address. Wix offers to do this on its own when you change URLs on most page types. Leave that box checked.
Where Wix Still Falls Short
Now the part the Wix pages do not lead with. None of these are deal breakers. All of them are things a local business on Wix has to handle on purpose.
| The Gap | What Wix Says | What to Do |
|---|---|---|
| Blank meta descriptions | Left empty by default, and Google will write one | Write your own on every page that matters |
| One location in schema | Markup is made for the primary location only | Add a custom LocalBusiness block on each location page |
| Thin homepage schema | Name, URL, logo and address | Add phone, hours and area served by hand |
| No SEO export or import | Listed as a feature request | Keep your titles and descriptions in a sheet |
| No help with schema | Customer Care cannot help with structured data | Test every block in Google's Rich Results Test |
| Generic llms.txt | Made and kept up on its own | Edit the summary and add your service pages |
A few of these need a word more.
You cannot get your SEO data out. Wix lists exporting your SEO tags to a file as a feature request it is collecting votes for. Importing them from a file is listed the same way. On a 12 page site that is fine. On a 60 page site with a page per city, it means a lot of clicking, and it makes a move off Wix harder later. Keep a spreadsheet of every title and description you write.
You are on your own with schema. Wix's settings guide says plainly that Customer Care cannot help with changes to structured data, and points you to a troubleshooting page or a hired expert. So test what you paste. One missing comma and the whole block gets ignored.
Speed has a ceiling you cannot touch. Website Builder Expert, which tested 12 builders in March 2025, found Wix's overall page speed good but its server response slower than Squarespace and GoDaddy in its Wix SEO review. On Wix you cannot change hosts or tune the server. What you can control is page weight. Fewer giant sliders, fewer embedded widgets, fewer fonts.
Some tools cost extra. The same review says the AI SEO Assistant is only on paid plans, which it listed from $17 a month. Wix's own blog says most SEO tools work on the free plan, but a free site lives on a Wix branded address, and that is what holds it back. If the site is meant to bring in calls, pay for the plan and use your own domain.
The Same AI File Ships on Every Wix Site
Nobody else is talking about this part, and it is the one we have the most data on.
An llms.txt file sits at yoursite.com/llms.txt. It is a short plain text file meant for AI tools. The llms.txt proposal, last updated August 10, 2026, says it should open with the site name, then a short summary with the key facts, then lists of links to the pages with more detail, each with a note on what it holds. If you want the long version, we wrote up what an llms.txt file is and what to put in it.
Wix now makes one for every site on its own. That sounds great. This is what we found when we looked closely.
On October 17, 2026 we checked the llms.txt file on the Top 1000 agency websites in the US. 485 of them had a valid file. 47 of those 485 were the automatic Wix file. Then we lined the 47 files up side by side.
Every one of the 47 files was 52 lines long. 48 of those lines were word for word the same on all 47. Only 4 lines changed from site to site. Those were the business name, a short summary, the homepage link and the address of the site's MCP endpoint. Each file had exactly 3 links. Not one linked to a service page.

What the Wix File Is Really For
Most of the Wix file is not about your business at all. It explains Wix's site MCP server. That is a connection point that lets an AI agent search your site, pull your contact details, and start a booking or a purchase for a visitor. Wix's developer docs say every Wix site has one and any compatible agent can connect to it with no login.
That is a real feature, and a forward looking one. But it means the file spends its words on how to call Wix tools, not on why someone should call you.
Why a Generic File Is Weaker Than One Written for You
Think about who reads this file. An AI assistant is trying to answer a question like "who fixes tankless water heaters near me". It reads your llms.txt to get the facts fast. This is what it finds in the Wix version, and what it does not.
- No services. There is no list of what you do. The model has to guess from a short summary or go crawl your pages.
- No service area. Nothing says which cities you cover. For local search, that is half the question.
- No proof. No license number, no years in business, no review count. These are the facts that make an answer worth quoting.
- No page map. The spec says the file should point to the pages with detail. The Wix file points to your homepage and two Wix links.
- Nothing that sets you apart. When 48 of 52 lines match every other Wix site, the file says more about Wix than about you.
A file written for your business flips that. The summary says what you do, where, since when, and how to reach you. Then it lists your service pages and city pages with a one line note each. That is the format the best hand written files in our agency check used. They had a summary with the founding year, home base, services and proof, a short list of key facts, and their service, industry and city pages with descriptions.
How to Edit Yours on Wix
Good news. Wix lets you change it. Per its llms.txt help page, go to SEO and GEO, scroll to Tools and settings, and click Go to llms.txt. Open the More Actions menu, click Edit file, then Continue. Make your changes and click Save Changes.
Two things to know first. You need a paid plan with a custom domain, and indexing turned on. And once you edit the file, Wix stops updating it on its own. So if you add a new service page later, add it to the file too. Wix keeps a Reset to Default button if you ever want the automatic version back.

This is the shape we would use for a made up plumber. Keep Wix's MCP lines at the bottom if you like. Put your business on top.

That file is about a third the length of the Wix one. It tells an AI tool more in its first three lines than the default does in all of them.
What the Wix AI Tools Do and Do Not Do
Wix has leaned hard into AI. Its SEO panel is now called SEO and GEO, and a lot of the new tools are about AI answers, not just Google. This is what they are, in plain terms, and where each one stops.
AI Visibility Overview
Wix's own blog says this tool tracks how your brand shows up in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude. It shows which questions bring up your site, which sources the models use instead of you, and how much traffic comes from AI tools.
That is useful as a scoreboard. It does not change what the models say about you. The only things that do are the words on your pages, your schema, your reviews and the other sites that mention you. Use the tool to find the questions you lose, then write a page that answers each one better.
The SEO Assistant and AI Tags
The SEO Assistant scans your site and suggests fixes. The Help Center also lists tools that write title tags, meta descriptions and blog post schema with AI. They are a fine first draft. Read every one before you save it. An AI tag that says "Quality plumbing services for all your needs" is just as blank as no tag. Swap in the service, the city and one fact.
The Site MCP Server
This is the newest piece and the one most owners do not know they have. It lets an AI agent act like a visitor on your site. It can look up your contact details, search your pages and start a booking. Wix says it only sees what a regular visitor can see, so members only pages and private data stay out.
For a service business that takes online bookings, this could matter a lot in a year or two. For a business that gets its work by phone, it does very little today. Either way, it is not a stand in for clear pages about what you do and where.
Blocking AI Crawlers
Wix also has a help page on blocking AI crawlers. Think hard before you use it. If AI tools cannot read your site, they cannot recommend you. For a local business, being quoted is usually worth more than being hidden.
Check Your Own Wix Site in Ten Minutes
You do not need a tool to see most of this. Open a browser and try these on your own site. Swap in your real domain.
- Open yoursite.com/llms.txt. If the top lines are your name and one short summary, then a block about AI Agent Access, you have the default file. Edit it.
- Open yoursite.com/sitemap.xml. You should see a list of sitemap files or page addresses. If a page you care about is missing, check its index toggle.
- Open yoursite.com/robots.txt. Make sure it does not block the whole site. A line that says Disallow with a single slash under every user agent means nothing gets in.
- Search Google for site:yoursite.com. Count the pages that show. Look at the titles and the two lines under each. Are they yours, or did Google write them?
- Paste your homepage into Google's Rich Results Test. Look for LocalBusiness. Click it and see which fields are filled in. If phone and hours are missing, you know what to add.
- View the page source of one service page. Search it for "description". If the content is empty, that page has no meta description.
Six checks, ten minutes. None of the fixes need a developer.
Wix vs WordPress for a Local Service Business
This is the question behind most Wix SEO searches. Should I just switch? This is how the two compare on the things that matter for a local business, based on what each platform gives you without extra work.
| What You Need | Wix | WordPress |
|---|---|---|
| Sitemap | Built in and kept current | Built in, usually run by an SEO plugin |
| Titles and descriptions | Patterns plus per page edits, no file import | Plugin fields, with bulk tools in most plugins |
| LocalBusiness schema | Automatic on the homepage, one location | Depends on the theme or plugin |
| Custom schema | Paste JSON-LD, 5 per setting | No set limit |
| llms.txt | Automatic template, editable on paid plans | Plugin made or hand written |
| Hosting and speed | Wix only, nothing to tune | Your pick, from great to awful |
| Upkeep | Wix handles updates | You handle plugin and theme updates |
WordPress has a higher ceiling. It also has a lower floor. A WordPress site with a cheap host and twenty stale plugins can be far worse than a clean Wix site.
So why did WordPress average higher in our test? Our read is that most WordPress sites run an SEO plugin that fills in titles, descriptions and schema with sane defaults the day it is installed. On Wix, the same fields sit empty until someone opens the panel. That is a habit gap more than a platform gap, and with 4 Wix sites out of 61 we would not stretch it further than that.
If your Wix site gets calls and you like running it, stay. Fix the defaults. Switch only if you have hit a wall that the settings cannot fix, like many locations, hundreds of city pages, or a need for full control of the server.
A One Hour Wix SEO Fix List
This is the order we would work in on a typical 10 to 15 page Wix site for a service business. Most owners can do all of it in an afternoon.
- Finish the SEO Setup Checklist. Business name, location, main keywords, Search Console connected.
- Fill in Business Info. Name, address and logo, matching your Google Business Profile word for word.
- Rewrite the main titles. Service plus city plus business name, under about 60 characters, all different.
- Write a meta description on every main page. What, where, one checkable fact and a reason to tap.
- Check the index toggles. Every page type you want found should be set to let search engines index it.
- Add schema the default skips. Phone and hours on the homepage, a Service block on each service page, a LocalBusiness block on each extra location page.
- Edit the llms.txt file. A real summary, then your service and city pages with a short note each.
- Write alt text on your photos. Say what the photo shows and where. In our scan, 20% of sites had images with no alt text.
- Test it. Run the homepage and one service page through Google's Rich Results Test.
Does this kind of fix list move anything? In our October 17, 2026 test we took five of the 61 sites and installed the fixes our tool wrote for each one, in front of the live site. Then we scanned the same pages again. The average score went from 68 to 79. All five went up. None of those five was on Wix, so take that as proof that filling in the basics moves the score, not as a Wix result.
If you would rather not hunt for each gap by hand, the scan we built to catch what Wix misses reads your pages the way a crawler does and writes the missing titles, descriptions and schema from your own content.

When It Is Time to Leave Wix
We do not tell people to move off Wix often. A move costs time and money, and a careless one costs rankings. But there are a few cases where we would.
- Many locations. Wix builds schema for one location. If you run five shops, you will be hand pasting schema on every location page and keeping it in sync forever.
- Hundreds of city or service pages. With no way to import or export SEO tags, a big site turns into a lot of clicks for every change.
- Speed you cannot get under control. If the pages are lean and the scores are still poor, the server is the part you cannot change on Wix.
- You need full control. Custom headers, edge rules or a build pipeline are not things Wix lets you own.
If none of those fit you, the fix is not a new platform. It is one hour in the SEO panel.
That is how we handle Wix sites when they come to Clickflame. We keep the site the owner already likes, fill in what Wix left blank, and measure it before and after. You can see the same scan we use on your own site on our Rank Any Site page.

Help Desk Answers
Is Wix any good for SEO?
Yes, for most local service businesses. Wix renders pages on the server, builds and updates your sitemap, compresses images and lets you edit titles, descriptions, URLs, redirects, canonical tags and schema. The weak spots are defaults you have to fill in yourself, like blank meta descriptions and a thin LocalBusiness schema.
Is Wix worse than WordPress for SEO?
In our October 17, 2026 scan of 61 business sites, the 4 Wix sites averaged 67 out of 100 and the 30 WordPress sites averaged 76. Four sites is too few to call it. Most of the gap was missing basics that you can add on either platform.
What are the most important Wix SEO settings?
Go to SEO and GEO in your dashboard, then Tools and settings, then SEO Settings. Set a title tag pattern and write a meta description for every main page. Fill in Business Info so Wix builds LocalBusiness markup. Add custom schema for your services. Then check your llms.txt file and edit its summary.
Does Wix add LocalBusiness schema automatically?
Yes, once you add a business name and address in Business Info. Wix adds it to the homepage only, for your primary location only, with your name, site URL, logo and address. Phone, hours and service area are not in the list, so add a custom markup if you want them.
Can I edit the llms.txt file on Wix?
Yes. Go to SEO and GEO, then Tools and settings, then Go to llms.txt, and pick Edit file from More Actions. Wix says it stops updating the file on its own once you edit it. You need a paid plan, a custom domain and indexing turned on.
Does Wix SEO work on the free plan?
Most of the settings work, but a free site lives on a Wix branded address, and Wix's own blog says that holds it back. The llms.txt file needs a paid plan and a custom domain, so a business that wants to be found should upgrade.
Why is my Wix site not showing up on Google?
Check that the page type is set to let search engines index it, that your site is connected to Google Search Console, and that the site is on your own domain. A brand new site can be indexed in days but take months to rank for anything with competition.
