Yext works. That was never the question. The question is what it costs you over the years, and what you are left holding when you stop paying. For most local businesses, the plain answer is that Yext charges thousands of dollars for work you could do once, mostly for free, and keep forever. That is the smoke. The receipts follow.
Why Citations Matter in the First Place
43% of businesses have inaccurate listings online, with the wrong phone number, address or business name somewhere on the web. NAP means Name, Address, Phone. When yours does not match across the directories, Google trusts it less, and it is one of the most common reasons a business cannot crack the top 3 of the local map pack.
So yes, fixing your listings matters. The problem is real. The fight is over how you pay to fix it.

What Yext Actually Does
You put your name, address, phone and business details into the Yext dashboard. Yext matches them against its publisher network of 70+ directories, locks each listing so other data sources cannot change it, adds hours, photos, services and specials, and suppresses old duplicates with the wrong number.
- 01MatchYour name, address and phone go in, and Yext pulls in the existing entries across its network.
- 02LockYext takes control of each matched listing so other sources cannot change it.
- 03EnhanceHours, photos, bios, services, specials and reviews on every listing.
- 04SuppressOld entries with bad numbers or addresses stay suppressed.
All four steps work. The catch is the word lock. The lock is not something you own. It is something you rent.
The Bill Nobody Adds Up
Yext is a subscription, billed per location, every year. Its self serve plans run about $199 to $999 a year for each location, and bigger brands sign custom contracts. Stay on the top plan for ten years and one shop has paid almost $10,000 to keep listings correct that it could have claimed once.
Now run that across five locations. Or count the years you forgot the card was even on file.
What Happens When You Stop Paying
When the payments stop, the lock comes off, and a lot of those listings come down or go back to the old, wrong info. Yext says it does not revert anything, it just stops sending updates. The receipts say otherwise.
Whitespark, one of the most respected names in local search, audited a chiropractic practice after its Yext subscription ended. Of 60 listings Yext had been managing:
- 15 disappeared completely.
- 21 went back to incorrect information.
- 24 stayed correct, and 21 of those lost their photos and extra details.
That is 36 of 60 listings gone or wrong, 60%, the moment the money stopped. You paid for years, and you walk away with less than you would have had if you had claimed them yourself on day one.
A listing you claim yourself, with your own login, stays yours. Nobody can switch it off because a card expired. That is the whole difference between Yext and doing the work once.
The Cheaper Ways to Fix Your Listings
1. Build Them Yourself, Once, for Free
This is what we recommend for almost every single location business. Claim Google, Apple, Bing, Yelp and Facebook first, then the core directories, then the ones for your trade and your town. It takes a few afternoons. When you are done, you own every login and nothing expires.
We teach the whole process, step by step and free, in the Citations & Directory Building module on learn.clickflame.com:
- Lock your NAP and build a master sheet, so every listing says exactly the same thing.
- Claim the core citation sites.
- Add industry specific directories.
- Find locally relevant citations.
- Audit your NAP for consistency, and fix the old ones.

2. Pay Once for a Citation Builder
No time to do it yourself? Pay someone to submit them once. BrightLocal's Citation Builder charges about $3.20 a site, one time, with no monthly fee. Fifty directories is around $160, and the listings are created in your name, so they stay when you are done paying.
3. Want a Dashboard Like Yext? Use a Cheaper Listing Tool
If you really want one screen that pushes your info to the big directory network, tools like Semrush Local do it for less than Yext's top plan. Its Local Pro plan is $60 a month per location and covers listing management across 70+ directories. It is still a subscription, so treat it the same way. Claim your most important listings yourself first, so the ones that matter are yours no matter what tool you cancel.
Who Should Still Buy Yext
Yext earns its money in a few places:
- Ten or more locations that need to be updated from one place.
- Franchise networks where corporate controls every location's details.
- Healthcare and financial services, where a wrong listing can be a legal problem.
For the one location plumber, mechanic, roofer or locksmith spending under $2,000 a month on marketing, Yext is the smoke. Claim your listings once and put the money into the things that actually ring the phone.
